After the fall of American International Pictures, the studio that was producing the original Knight Rider series, Universal Television sued A.I.P. over the failure of that series. Eventually, the studios settled out of court in 1987 with nearly everyone getting a percentage of the profits from the show. The first three seasons of the show remained on the air, but the fourth and final season was canceled. NBC released the final three hours of the fourth season to the video store market to enhance the DVD sales of the show. The video was only available for about a month before the entire series was pulled from the market.
After the show was canceled for good, a television movie was made which wound up becoming the highest-rated episode (in its timeslot) of that particular season. It was a ratings hit and ABC ordered six additional episodes. This episode was later re-titled Knight Rider: The Next Generation and those six episodes became the first episodes of the new series that was created to continue the movie.
The show was picked up by NBC for a full-fledged series, and the show ran for three seasons from 1990 to 1992. The show was a very popular hit with NBC’s daytime viewership, which is widely know for driving back-to-back daytime soap operas.
In 1995, Universal released the show on DVD. The final four episodes from The Next Generation were released in their original TV movie format.

A television movie entitled Knight Rider 2000 was made and first aired on NBC on May 28, 1994. It was made solely from unused footage from the original series. Universal Television and 20th Century Fox Television, the production companies for the original show, sued Universal Studios for both contractual and copyright infringement on the grounds that the film was completely unofficial, and did not meet the standards for a theatrical release.
