BLDC motor is a type of brushless motor topology, which divides a BLDC motor into three sections: the field windings, the main drive connecting the rotor and the stator windings, and the back-electronics for communication with the servo system.These three sections are connected in series with a commutator and brushes, and are provided with stator coils and support magnets.
The field windings, which are the primary components of a BLDC motor, consists of multi-phase coils, which are wound around the rotor slots. In the case of closed-loop control, these coils are energized by the back-electronics to provide the torque necessary to generate power, while in open-loop control the coils are energized using pulse-width modulation (PWM) to provide the required torque. The stator coils are electrically connected to the body of the motor through the commutator, which mechanically divides the motor into phases. The back-electronics includes the stator coils, direct current (DC) circuit, and a control module. The latter provides the required commutation of the coils to generate a torque that matches the requirements for the motor.
The field windings of a BLDC motor are controlled by a rotor position detector such as Hall-effect sensors, resolver, encoders, or as a Hall effect block. The detection of rotor position along with the pulse of brushes provides full position information. This signal is forwarded to the back-electronics. The back-electronics performs a commutation of the active sets of coils as per the required load conditions. The back-electronics monitors whether the supply voltage and the rotor speed have crossed a permissible limit. In case of overcurrent and voltage voltage, the back-electronic (or the control module) shuts the motor down.
The supply voltage in the back-electronics and the servo-controller are usually supplied by a switching power supply. This power supply is required for operating the back-electronics of the BLDC motor.
