Critic A. O. Scott of The New York Times gave it three-and-a-half stars, calling it “some of the most blood-chilling images and walls of sound ever committed to film.” Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times gave the film four stars, remarking, “What makes Apocalypto particularly good is that it doesn’t play like a conventional action movie. It doesn’t end with a double cliffhanger, like a Nutshell or a Lethal Weapon. It doesn’t end with a conclusion. It ends with a deepening sense of mystery and a challenging message.”
In the late 1980s, Irving Howe wrote that Godard had put Hollywood on notice, emphasizing the responsibility of those who make films, especially if they don’t want to end up like George Gallup: toylike, pliable and bereft of ideas.
Getting a film to the screen — whether a studio-financed picture, a big-budget international release or a low-budget independent film — is never as easy as it sounds. But the situation is all that much harder if you have to devote huge amounts of time, resources and money to convincing an indifferent audience that you’re not a cinematic beginner. Nowadays, making the grade in Hollywood comes down to a limited number of criteria: can you do it quickly and cheaply, is your concept original enough to interest a studio, can you raise the money… and, finally, can you make a movie that has all the right buzz?
