Space Battleship Yamato (Japanese: スペースバトル艦隊Yamato, Hepburn: Supē Bakuto TenrīYamato) is a Japan-made space adventure science fiction anime television series which ran from October 5, 1977 until March 22, 1978. This show follows the efforts of a ragtag group of astronauts on a space battleship called the Yamato as they try to get to Earth in time to save mankind. It is inspired by Hideo Gosha’s 1975 manga/anime Space Battleship Yamato, and Katsuhiro Otomo’s 1995 film adaptation of the original manga.[9][10]
Yamato 3000 is the brand name in Japan for the series, along with the same name for the subtitle that is purported as the full name of the series. In the series, the Yamato has been renamed to the Yamato 3000, about three years after the events of the original Space Battleship Yamato, and has lost about a third of its original firepower. The name Yamato 3000 refers to the fact that the ship is capable of such speeds and the fact that it is capable of maintaining a maximum speed of over three times that of the original battleship.
In the beginning, Commander Matthew Walker, the first officer on the Yamato, goes to destroy Earth’s solar system. However, Captain James Drake, the timeship’s commander, plus most of the crew are left behind in the latest episode. In the sequel, Shunsaku Ikeda has returned to the role of Walker. Commander Drake and his crew are also being pursued by the Spacy cruiser Ark Angel, in search for a seed of life on this world. When this goal is discovered, the Spacy find Drake and his crew. Commander Drake and crew are then rescued by the highly advanced Ark Angel. Drake then proceeds to tell them that human beings are nearing extinction on Earth. Though reluctant, Drake accepts to use this advanced Ark Angel to go to Earth and capture the Evangelion when humans once again become a danger.
