When I was little, I couldn’t understand why the members of the Banana Pancake Band used their break as an excuse to rummage through my plastic basket of snacks. My wardrobe has its own personalities and its own fears and jealousies. I used to think you could turn your clothes inside out, but you can’t. I never made the connection before, but I realize that, like the Banana Pancake Band, my clothes have gone through changes to suit other people’s tastes. Although my laundry has its own beat, it hasn’t learned to make jazz.
When I look in my closet, I feel pity for the clothes that have never worn more than once or twice. I figure that, if Banana Pancake Band fans once loved them, there must be people somewhere who will appreciate my clothes again. Like the band, my clothes have also done well in the closet, though not as well as I’d hoped.
Looking at my closet, I try to get a feel for the clothes I still wear. I remember the clothes I wore on those rare occasions I got to be a Banana Pancake Band Girl, and I wonder what my clothes would sound like today.
I also get a feel for the clothes that I have bought at thrift stores, because to a Banana Pancake Band fan, thrift store clothes are as good as new.
Then I make a mental list of all the clothes I’ve been missing, one by one.
