For the book’s duration, Howes uses Photoshop exclusively. But, as he explains, if you’d like to try out the same process in Lightroom, you can follow his instructions and have the same results… just using Lightroom instead of Photoshop. Granted, that’s not much of a gain.
Here’s the usual pile of newbies showing a few decent to respectable shots that is our stock-in-trade here. The RAW files were imported directly from the camera using the DNG converter in Lightroom. The originals were blind copied each to a disk. The shots were edited with Lightroom, which is partially powered by Photoshop, and paired with the Photoshop license.
The results after retouching were exported to a supported file format, which can be used as a working file — unchanged, or to make the image useable as a print.
The success of this article is a testament to its lack of spectacular-ness. It combines two venerable workflows, that of the snapshot and that of the contact sheet. This article does not however cover the contact sheet generation workflow. Instead it goes into depth regarding the snapshot workflow. Some salient points include:
1) The mix of the snippet workflow and the screen shot workflow. Snippets are placed or relocated in various locations on the screen shot. The positions are matched with positions shots from the dreamscapes yet to be taken.
Notice that the new layer is thicker than the layer that we just selected. Also notice that the bottom two layers are nearly transparent. In addition, try extending the gradient from the top to bottom using the “Fx” effect bucket tool (Command + E) and selecting “Saturate” and changing the color to white. Click on the gradient and select “Dodge and Burn” from the menu to extend the darkening across the top and bottom of the document.
Since we spent so much time on this exercise we will now take a break and come back to the beginning. Select the Background Eraser tool (Command B) and, sure enough, that tool’s orange shape is covering up the white background that we originally used in the workspace.
The Gradient stamp tool is used for creating a pattern in Photoshop. The Gradient features in Photoshop allow you to create patterns by choosing a border color and a middle color. The Gradient stamp tool is used to apply the layer’s pattern to an image.

Some software programs claim to offer the “Photoshop experience’, but it quickly becomes apparent that the claim is purely marketing. Photo and graphics editing software can be just as feature-rich and well-rounded as Photoshop without requiring a user to sign up for a perpetual subscription. For that reason, we look at Photoshop Elements to see how it fares.
Adobe Photoshop Elements offers photo editing, design and animation tools in a simple package for consumers. It’s less of an all-in-one solution than its photo editing software, but for basic photo editing tasks, it stands up to the likes of Photoshop.
With Elements, removing objects from a photo or a layer is as simple as selecting “Lasso” (right-click to resize the lasso selection tool), drawing a box around an image, and clicking “Delete.” You’ll learn to do similarly with a selection tool held above an image (right-click to resize it and click to select). It’s worth noting that once the photo is complete you’ll find the tools and features absent, so it feels a bit more like a toy than a fully-featured photo editor.
Elements is the last version of a software that began life as Elements 2 and Photoshop Express, and it’s the easiest-to-recommend version of the app. In this redesign, the software strategy is to either take less of a risk with changes and avoid lengthy iterations, as with the free Elements version, or build out features slowly across a range of different releases. What this means for the app in the long-run is that some of it’s most popular features and tools are already there.
